Introducing 1E Client

The 1E Client provides client functionality for Shopping, WakeUp, Content Distribution, and 1E.

1E Client features and modules overview

Many features and modules are optionally enabled and configured. The 1E Client can also be extended to support additional features and client modules.

  • Windows devices: The 1E Client is installed as a Windows service, with a small footprint, with some client modules having their own service if enabled.

  • Non-Windows devices: The 1E Client is installed as a background daemon, also referred to as a service on macOS.

1E Client does not include modules for 1E NightWatchman Agent, which is available as a separate agent. However, NightWatchman Management Center optionally integrates with 1E to provide online status of its clients.

Windows

  • User surveys and notifications, and notification area icon - used by Experience Analytics to enable User Sentiment and Info Surveys to be presented to end-users.

  • 1E Telemetry - enables 1E to improve its product capabilities and features. It can be configured during 1E Setup and information on the data that is sent to 1E is provided in the 1E Platform documentation.

  • Content Distribution client module - supports content distribution for MECM and 1E.

  • PXE Everywhere client module - also known as PXE Everywhere Agent - allows computers to automatically boot up into Windows PE, which then allows a Windows Operating System to be installed.

  • Shopping client module - supports access to a self-service software portal (which integrates with Configuration Manager).

  • WakeUp client module - integrates with MECM, NightWatchman and/or Content Distribution.

macOS

Linux

Solaris (no longer supported).

On non-Windows devices, 1E Client provides only 1E client features.

  • Real-time response to instructions - which supports the retrieval of information using questions, and running actions

  • Tags (freeform and device/coverage)

  • Criticality and Location

  • 1E Client UI - to support the Real-Time Control Center, Announcements, Surveys, and Sentiment features of the Experience application #

  • Inventory - including process usage, to support:

    • The 1E Activity Record feature

    • The Inventory and other consumer applications.

  • Performance metrics - to support the Experience application #

  • Policy feature - to support consumer applications: 1E Endpoint Automation ##, Experience Analytics #, and Content Distribution #

  • Modules to support the following:

    • The Patch Success application #

    • Command and script execution

    • Content distribution

    • Device criticality

    • Manipulation of files and processes

    • Manipulation of registry and WMI #

    • Security #

    • Software uninstallation

    • User sessions, including Primary User.

Deployment

The Client Deployment Assistant can be used with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager to deploy 1E Client to Windows computers, and also 1E NightWatchman Agent. Supported Platforms

Refer to 1E Client requirements for currently supported OS.

Windows

  • The zip for 1E Client for Windows is available for download from the 1E Support Portal.

  • Professional and Enterprise editions are supported for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

  • All versions are provided with 32-bit & 64-installers, and can be installed on physical and virtual computers.

Linux

  • 1E Client packages for other Linux distributions can be requested, including Raspbian for Raspberry Pi.

  • The 1E Client for Linux supports Linux variations on Intel 64-bit platforms.

  • 1E Client packages for Linux are included in the non-Windows zip available for download from the 1E Support Portal.

  • 1E Client supports only 1E features on non-Windows devices.

Constraints of Legacy OS

In this documentation, the following are referred to as legacy OS. Below are described some known issues for these OS.

1E does not provide support for 1E products on the following OS unless the OS is explicitly listed as being supported for a specific 1E product or product feature. This is because Microsoft has ended mainstream support for these OS or they are not significantly used by business organizations.

  • Windows XP *

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows 7

  • Windows 8.0

  • Windows 8.1

  • Windows Server 2003 *

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Windows Server 2012

  • Windows Server 2012 R2

1E Client 24.5 and later will not install on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Please contact 1E if you intend to continue using any of the other legacy OS. If you experience an issue, then please try replicating the issue on a supported OS.
